Girl. It was the Holly Hobby shirt. In eighth grade, a girl named Heather told me she didnโt wanna hang out with me because I wore pants with Holly Hobby on them. I had big round glasses with my name in tiny print on the outer lower left lens.
You might not believe this, but itโs trueโฆ I had my own version of Bubbly Girl, and I was just thinking about her this morning.
Wow! You evil witch, you!!! ๐ Unreal what people do to avoid their fears. I admire your willingness to have curiosity! It's a beautiful thing, not dangerous
I lived this as well in another group. Itโs funny how they all seem to use the same tactics, just with different names. I am glad you are here sharing your experiences here!
Please forgive me, I'm confused. Were Elvin Dervish and Hardline Hannah people you knew from school? I thought you met them later in life, post-college. How did they know about Bubbly Girl?
Oh crap, I obviously wasnโt clear. Elfin, Hannah and Bubbly were all part of the church and studied the Bible with me in 1990-91. Deena was a separate story. Does that make sense?
Shari, you show such bravery sharing these painful stories.
When I was around 12, I remember my friends Steve and Steve telling me that "Jeff isn't our friend anymore." So the next time I saw him I bent his finger back. And he was studying classical piano! (Luckily, there was no permanent injury.) I felt so terrible about it, I eventually apologized to him. I ended up spending more time with him that with the two Steves, and Jeff and I even went to Lincoln Center together. (I couldn't believe that the Tchaikovsky symphony I listened to on my cheapo turntable could be heard performed live!)
I also remember once feeling terrible that I had offended a doctor who was on the editorial board of one of the magazines I edited at SCP. I made a joke about something he said, but he didn't laugh and quickly got off the phone. A few days later I got up my courage and called him up to apologize -- and he had no idea what I was talking about. (Talk about carrying around a load of guilt...)
But after that he played many practical jokes on me when we'd meet at conferences. One time, we were at a restaurant, and he must of spoken to the waitress before she came to take our orders. When she came to get my order, she told me that the special that evening was llama burgers. Now I don't know if you remember, but I used to raise llamas in Utah. So you can imagine my surprise that a restaurant would serve llama burgers. So I told her about my connection to llamas, and she said, Wow, these llama burgers are imported from Utah! Horrors! I imagined my poor llamas, Dolly Llama and Fernando Llama and even old Lorenzo Llama, and maybe Llama Linda, now ground up and served on a bun with lettuce and pickles. Yikes! Then they all laughed at me...
By the way, did you ever try to find Deena online? It is curious why she acted that way. Enquiring minds need to know!
Should we be commending them for not driving a stick through her temple while she slept? I mean - thatโs really driving the evil out of the camp. Iโm calling out those girls as lukewarm - so from my understanding of the ICOC theology - THEY committed the worst sin. Not because of any inherit wisdom - but I donโt have any lukewarm genes. Iโm either both feet in or running for my life. Grateful to be done with all that now and actually love all people unconditionally. If only the ICOCโs god loved like that ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ

Omigod!!! You solved the mystery!!! Bless you!!! ๐๐๐

I know! ๐ Who knew that Iโd go from seances to a legitimate cult, tho. Lawd have mercy.

Thank you, Morgan! And yes, they all have a lot in common. Sadly.
I wonder if Elfin is following these. Would I be the most terrible sinner if I sent them to her? Lol.
We would have to not touch your corrupted flesh afterwards ๐

I missed that Bubbly Girl was a different person than Deena. My bad, not yours: I need to slow down when I read.

1. OMIGOD about the llama burgers! Iโm laughing/crying ๐๐ญ
2. I did try to find Deena. Itโs like she fell off the face of the earth. Not a trace. ๐คทโโ๏ธ

Totally lukewarm, they should have stoned her. ๐๐
